Midnight Express/House of Yes/Weird Magic, bold yet subdued, rogue demigods of the Brooklyn Warehouse Underworld have united forces for the sake of delightful brain melting. Bear Witness:

Los Angeles based high-concept musician, artist and entertainment sensation Geneva Jacuzzi has teamed up with House of Yes Theatre to create her first fully produced performance theatre spectacle, titled Idiot Menagerie of the Automatic Dream Crud.

The show brings Geneva Jacuzzi’s lo-fi dark-pop music to life with an elaborate theatrical set, geometric choreography by the dance-troupe Spazz Hands, elaborately bizarre costuming, and absurdist aerial acrobatics. Jacuzzi herself stars as Auto-Garvo, a homeless bum who stumbles upon a mysterious “Enema-Umbrella Idiot Art Gun with Hose Attachment” to become the creator and fascist destroyer of art objects, art beings and all things, including herself.

Idiot Menagerie of the Automatic Dream Crud is written by Casey Obelisk and Geneva Jacuzzi. Directed and Produced by Kae Burke. Spazz Hands Dancers Kat Pratt, Francis Stallings, Elena Delgado, Kate Asson, Kae Burke. Lighting design by Jason Sinopoli. Props and Objects by Emma Chammah. Costumes by Kae Burke.

The theatrical spectacle is part of an event jointly hosted by Midnight Express, a series of multimedia cross-genre fusion of solar darkness and underwater house jamborees, and Weird Magic, ruler of vibrations visual, aural, and cyber.

11:00PM Weird Magic: Extra Terrestrial feelings and flavors best suited for those with hazy yet delightful inclinations.

1:00AM Geneva Jacuzzi: As Auto Garvo (see above & below for details)

2:00AM Veronica Vasicka: (Minimal Wave): Founder of Minimal Wave Records, co-founder of East Village Radio and Queen of all synthscapes icy and weird. French Bedroom Techno, Belgian Heavy Transgenre, Dutch Cassette Rave.

3:30AM A Special Dream Tag Team Set between:

Ital (Planet Mu): Washy avant-House singed to Los Angeles’ 100% Silk formerly of Mi Ami.

&

Steve Summers (L.I.E.S./Clone): Grimy and authentic lo-fi acid house and member of dream/nightmare synth project Innergaze.

Lighting will be provided by puppet master general Jared Spafford.

Take Note:

1. Geneva will be flown into New york to unload merchandise.
2. Geneva will be homeless and attempt a mugging.
3. Geneva will mince, balk and dawdle and not know the meaning of employment.
4. Geneva will eat and need to use a toilet, and will contrive to know
how to use this equipment.
5. Geneva will fly experiencing moments of clarity, grace, confusion,
upset, malice, disassociation, and acting like a dodecahedron turned
on its side and left for dead in an alley, all the while expelling air
mingled with vibrating sound on wind into an electronic headset.
6. Geneva will be left bored, let down, a simpleton, wanting, panting,
holding a glass, represented now by the ever-smaller image of her self
shown backwards and reversed in the retinal ass of a few friends and
admirers.
7. Geneva will go to the after-party.

Addendum:

*8. Geneva, the next morning, will find she really was given an
enema-umbrella gun with lots of flashy lights and probably attach it
to her ass again later, just not at the moment, because everyone will
want bagels.

more than eighteen times has this “performance” been previewed, reviewed, cancelled, faked or talked about in some way or another as an aeriel ballet, a living art piece, concert etc and under so many titles, such as A LOOK INSIDE THE ASS MENAGERIE of AN IDIOT WE LOVED DEEPLY or______ so you might think the gigantic confusion and uproar itself was part of the plan, but everyone knew someone at some point had to stage it, and that that someone would need the type of equipment to support an aerial ballet (ala the Carrousel scene in Logan’s Run).

Not only has someone agreed to do it, but they’ve been persuaded to stage it the way Geneva wanted it staged twenty-five years ago!

We’re proud to announce that in May we’ll be releasing an LP and a 12” single by one of our French favorites, In Aeternam Vale. “Dust Under Brightness” is a collection of remastered songs, curated from an array of cassette-only releases from the 1980s. The 12” single features the original unedited 12 minute version of “Dust Under Brightness” and highly sought after cult techno track from 1987 called “Highway Dark Veins”.
Article about In Aeternam Vale originally published in DOUCHE FROIDE MAGAZINE # 2 [June 2002]

“There are bands that have been acting ruthlessly in the shadow for years, in a completely confidential manner, then one day chance (but does chance exist ?) makes you find one of their recordings, listen to it, and at that moment you could kick yourself for not having discovered these soundscapes earlier and you try to find all of them. That is exactly what happened to me with In Aeternam Vale, a strange name that will surely remind you of nothing in particular, and that is really a shame. At the basis of this band, a guy named Laurent Prot, a kind of equivalent to what Frank Tovey represented in England or Dirk Ivens in Belgium, an electronics fanatic who experimented all the sounds that you can obtain from analogical synthesizers and rhythm´n boxes.
With the passing of time, In Aeternam Vale´s work remains astonishingly powerful, cold and caustic with its uncompromising minimalism, but also provocative and capable to smash your ass on the dance-floor. In Aeternam Vale was created in Lyons (France) in 1983 and is very much influenced at the beginning by punk-rock nihilism and aggressiveness. In these years, there were a guitar-player and also a bassist but, from 1985 onwards, Laurent Prot starts to lead the band alone with some collaborators appearing punctually. That same year, the “Far” tape comes out in a very limited edition, and let me tell you that even listening to it today is a real slap in the face. It begins with an incredible cover-version of PIL´s “The Suit”, appearing on the famous 1979 “Metal Box”. The rhythm is hard and robotic in the Kraftwerk style, the synthesizer sounds like an obsession, the notes appear in dribs and drabs, and the singing is terribly haunting, a threatening and nasal groan. A dehumanized universe closer to neurosis than to the electronic grandiloquence so prevalent in the music of the eighties. An unwholesome and claustrophobic world such as the litanies of a Monte Cazzaza who would have made music with just a keyboard. The tape goes on with the song “Dans le Métro” in which the words of the title are repeated during almost ten minutes until it becomes only a cry of pain on a rhythm that foreshadows the Electro Body Music and perhaps even more the sound of Le Syndicat Electronique´s first songs.
However, if IAV´s universe is quite nightmarish, even suffocating (the song “Holocauste” possesses an unbelievable violence, very close to industrial music), a below-the-surface humour is omnipresent, because Laurent Prot is also a ferocious and cynical satirist, a little bit like a Jean-Louis Costes who would have listened to too many new wave songs. Nevertheless, through titles such as “Sailor on the Sea” or “Voyage pour Violon Atmospherik”, Prot proves that he can create melancholy, psychedelic and dreamlike atmospheres. The following tape, “Première Rétrorythmie Cardiaque” (1986) announces the beginning of a long collaboration with Organic, a very good label from Grenoble (they signed Palo Alto or Klimperei among others .
The songs are shorter and much “easier” to listen to and represent a kind of sublimation of what was initiated in the “Far” tape. The song “AL W.” can be seen as a real apogee in Prot´s career, the singing becomes an everlasting sob, no need for words any more. No vowels or consonants are detectable, and the voice sinks into a bloodless complaint but not really desperate. It is as if we had lost the war, we were among debris and dead bodies, but it doesn´t matter. There is this kind of acceptance of disillusion as a natural state. This feeling is emphasized by the sound of solemn and dim organs as inspired by a John Carpenter movie. The jerky and lively rhythm makes this title one of the best “cold wave” songs, a tragic hit to dance on despair. The overall tonality of the tape is quite experimental and moves from harsh and painful titles (“Haine”) to much more peaceful atmospheres (“M-7”) or to fierce and restless songs reminiscent of the early DAF (“La Lune Explose”). Even further, even stronger, the “Dub” tape (1988) turns IAV´s minimalism into a sonorous nightmare. It is at least the case in the first songs of the tape. There only remain shouts, a warlike rhythm´n box and no longer any sign of melody. Prot starts to use the sampling, opening his music to new horizons closer to industrial music than to techno-pop. The second part of the tape is more sophisticated, we no longer feel the punk-rock spectrum, and explores slow rhythms sometimes similar to the New Beat of the time, but still very cold, not reassuring but playful.
The two following tapes, “Recovered Flesh” (1989) and “Out of Terror” (1989) are in this same research for a music to dance to but very dark. There are even titles close to what we can call “dark ambient” (“She Said”), nightmarish soundscapes foreshadowing the Cold Meat Industry style, but the essential things to remember from this period are the collaborations with the female singer Chrystelle Marin and her astonishing voice recalling nocturnal goddesses such as the early Siouxsie or the sensual Mona Soyoc from Kas Product. Laurent Prot went on recording tapes in the 1990´s, going from transe-techno to ambient and now to house music, but with still a lot of analogical sounds. Personally, I refused to listen to these recordings for a simple reason, I know that I am not going to find all the restrained violence, the caustic aspect, desperately dark and “cheap” of the early IAV. Laurent Prot told me that it was a difficult and painful time, that explains this visceral relationship to not only his music but also, I would add, to the listening of it. In Aeternam Vale, it is an emotional language which often shows the urgency behind it. Feelings in the rough. ”

Inspired by the music for her shows, ‘Minimal Wave’ the label was born; forming an outlet for re-issuing her discovered gems. Brought to a wider audience when she and Stones Throw’s Peanut Butter Wolf compiled ‘The Minimal Wave Tapes’ last year, volume two is out later this month.
Veronica Vasicka
http://www.minimalwave.com
Veronica Vasicka is a photographer, musician, DJ and founder of the epic record label and on-line music resource Minimal Wave. As one of the founding members of East Village Radio, she managed the station during its pirate days and began collecting obscure and long forgotten gems that fell somewhere between the Cold Wave, Post Punk and Minimal Synth genres. Not knowing what to classify these bands as, she coined the genre Minimal Wave and set up the website minimalwave.com as an online resource to share her finds with the rest of the world.

The response to the website was huge and shortly after its launch, Veronica began tracking these artists down and re-issuing their work on the Minimal Wave label. Most of these bands recorded extremely limited copies of their work in their basements and shared their work with the world via John Peel’s radio show and a handful of underground music mailings. The music released on the label is a stripped down, DIY and purer approach to mainstream synth pop. Never-the-less, fans of New Wave acts, and bands like Kraftwerk, New Order, and Joy Division who are seeking something a bit different or looking to expand upon the familiar genre, will not be disappointed.

In addition to running Minimal Wave, Veronica launched the Cititrax label as way to expose newer synth-based act as well as obscure House and Italo classics. She DJs monthly in New York City and around the world, and every Sunday night on her East Village Radio show, Minimal Wave.
Most recently, she released the highly lauded Minimal Wave Tapes: Volume 2 compilation along with Stones Throw label founder Peanut Butter Wolf.

We’re proud to announce a full length LP release entitled “Clean Tables Have To Be Burnt” by UK legends Hard Corps, a band we’ve been long time admirers of. Aside from their releases on Survival and Polydor, Hard Corps gained some notoriety for their unique and uncompromising live shows throughout the 1980s. It was the juxtaposition between their hard edged industrial sound and the fragile and enigmatic vocals of French frontwoman Regine Fetet that created an unusual dichotomy, lending to their strength of character as a band and thus allowing them to stand out from the rest.

A 12” white label, released by Survival Records, containing the hammering rhythmic attack of Dirty and the softer, melodic, pulse of Respirer (To Breathe) was circulated around London’s dance floors. In no time a wave of attention hit them and throughout 1984 and into 1985 they dominated the independent pop charts.

John Peel championed them on his infamous late night Radio One show and they headlined at his ICA Rock Week in the Mall, London. By 1985 Hard Corps had signed with major label giants Polydor. This enabled the band to work with a couple of their favoured and respected producers, Martin Rushent (known mostly for his exceptional work with the Human League) and Depeche Mode producer and Mute Records supremo, Daniel Miller. These sessions provided the public with just one single due to the labels non-promotion, Je Suis Passée, a sweeping arrangement of breathtaking beauty, combining pumping sequences and sheer power of emotion of Regine’s voice.

The band went on a major tour with The Cure in 1985 and Depeche Mode in 1988, before finally disintegrating.

Now for the first time ever, rare unreleased versions of Hard Corps tracks from the 1980s have been remastered and are being made available. “Clean Tables Have To Be Burnt” is a 180 gram vinyl pressing limited to 999 copies with double sided innersleeve featuring a beautiful group shot and all of Regine’s lyrics. The album will be available on April 16th. Track listing and sound samples now available:

Our sublabel Cititrax, is proud to present new music from Brooklyn based synth duo Innergaze. Their second LP, “Mutual Dreaming” is a highly anticipated release and we’re ecstatic that the vinyl will finally be out this month.

“Innergaze drag us slightly further back into the glorious cradle of dance music. Their music, crushed and static, obscured by sound. EBM, coldwave, early techno fight it out for dominance of the drum machine. Casually brutal vocals force their way through from the Death Factory. As if Chris & Cosey’s dalliances with the Eurythmics had conjured a restless pioneering demon to duet with Annie Lenox but had instead ended up consuming her. Celestial synths coexisting with the industrial landscape bellow.” -20 Jazz Funk Greats

“Innergaze is the musical project of Aurora Halal and Jason Letkiewicz – Letkiewicz is known for his work with or as Manhunter, Steve Summers and Rhythm Based Lovers; Halal a video editor and director. It’s pretty clear that Innergaze is a wholly collaborative effort, as Letkiewicz’s penchant for pulsing beats and organic house mingles with the hazy, psychedelic new-age atmospheres that shine through Halal’s video work, together creating something that could loosely fall under the ‘minimal synth’ tag. Don’t expect some sort of easily placeable sound, though – Innergaze has far more personality than your average electro duo, relying on intuition, emotion and a good jam session to create their music, not a rigid set of pre-determined parameters. Together, it’s like a robot coated in human flesh, sentient yet vaguely artificial, and like most cyborgs portrayed on TV, quite beautiful. I’m pretty sure they are in love, too, which is an interesting dynamic for a sound that often relies on aesthetic impassiveness.” - YellowGreenRed

The “Mutual Dreaming” LP is a limited pressing of 999 copies on 160 gram vinyl, housed in a high quality full color printed sleeve featuring a collaborative artwork concept by Veronica Vasicka and Aurora Halal. Links to buy the album will be updated here shortly.
